META: - The left side menu contains more than seven items, and other links are scattered in the text, which is usually an indication that the tree needs to be re-worked. In this particular case it seems that two broad categories of information have been intermixed - stuff about Rubicon itself (News, Jobs, Donate), and stuff about the programs. Who is your audience? I suggest - if the time can be spent, rework the tree to add an "about us" link to the side menu, which can be a catchall for annualReport.html, FactsAbout.html, mission.html etc. The top level should have teasers, but the extensive text that's there now is actually an obstacle to entry. - The "success story" is very powerful, and should definitely be highlighted. But having multiple links to the same one detracts from the effect. If there are multiple stories available I would suggest using more than one. If more than one story is available I would link to one from the picture at the top of a page, and if there is also a success story link in the page's text have the link in the text be to the full list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL: All areas/pages - The logo is not in the same position on all the pages, and is missing on some. This makes the pages look inconsistent and will make using style sheets more difficult. I suggest moving it to a standard place - either at the top of the menu, or above or below the words "Rubicon Programs Inc." - Tab navigation doesn't work. - Text is rendered graphically, which will be invisible to screen reading programs used by blind visitors. - Some fonts use absolute sizing (an easy code fix). I suggest using style sheets wherever possible for positioning and text style. Minimize the use of tables. Eliminate graphical text. This can be done without radically changing the appearance of the pages. Left side menu (these are triage level problems) - Blue-on-blue will not be readable to some color-blind visitors. - Text doesn't resize (because it's graphical). - Image maps are completely useless to screen readers and voice input devices. - There's no indication of the current location (menu is boilerplate). - "Home" is at the bottom - standard practice is at the top. - There are too many links, and housekeeping links ("jobs, annual report, etc.) are mixed with program links (housing, integrated services). I suggest re-doing the menu as text instead of image map, with style sheets used for positioning and background color. Indicate the current page by a different text color. Move Home to the top of menu. Visually separate program links and "housekeeping" links, or rework the tree - see Meta above. Use tabindex to insure that visually impaired visitors will be presented with the menu last, except for the "Home" link. Picture-based links across the top of some pages - Appear inconsistently - Are not always labeled - Pictures are too small for easy viewing. - Links are duplicated in the side menu or elsewhere in page body. I suggest - use one horizontal or square picture specific to the individual page. Since all the links besides "success story" are in the side menu, link that remaining picture to the success story. (see meta above). The picture on the homecare page (homecare.html) has a more appropriate feature size. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SPECIFIC PAGES: Splash page Obviously not accessible in any kind of non-visual browser. The load time is actually not so bad, and the enter now option mitigates some of the problems, but visitors who have come to the site more than once are wasting their time. Suggest losing the page. Home page (home.html) - Menu issues discussed above - Remove pictures across the top - replace with a single, more horizontal or square picture with larger features. Make this a link to a single "success story", with the complete list of success stories under "participants" (see meta above). - Move the extended news and updates information back under news. Put only a teaser on the top level - Move "Facts about Rubicon" into an "About us" choice on the main menu that also includes "Mission" and "Annual report." (not just on the top level). - Consider moving "Jobs" under "contact us" - this is becoming a standard practice. (not just on the top level). Supporters/Management team (donors.html, boardMgmt.html) - Both of these pages have the same heading within the page ("People key to our success"). Remove this and let text stand alone. Annual report (anualReport.html) - Have html report spawn in new window, so visitors dont' have to go back to the home page to get out. Rubicon Enterprises (bizEnterprises.html) - Move top pictures to the top of their respective program listings. Individual Rubicon Enterprises pages (landscape.html, bakery.html, homecare.html) - Add link from program sub pages back to general enterprise page. These pages contain different or non-menu text blocks in an area used on most of the site for the menu block. If these are actually being used for marketing, leave them alone. Otherwise I suggest re-working of these pages to include the general menu in the expected position, with the other information moved elsewhere. Housing (housing.html) - Add link from sub pages back to general housing page. (Consider adding a horizontal menu (tabs) to navigate among sub pages and general housing page). Integrates Services (integServices.html) - Add link from sub pages back to general services page. (Consider adding a horizontal menu (tabs) to navigate among sub pages and general services page). Jobs (jobs.html) - Add link from individual job listings back to main job page. Contact page (contact.html) - Include enterprise contacts on this page - do not force people to navigate to the individual pages to get this. - Include explanatatory headings, not just links, for donate and program contacts.
